A common assumption since medical times is that doctors and patients should not be involved in any romantic way. But now according to a new survey from state medical boards, Doctors are contacting their patients online and engaging in unprofessional acts over the internet. Most boards have received at least one complaint, and 25 percent had received more than 3 complaints.
The question is now whether that doctors should be punished for their wrong behavior? Or should medicine and love be allowed to be combined? It will be very interesting to see if any doctors will lose their license in the coming years and if their will be more enforcement of the rules by medical boards across the country.

I think it's unprofessional for a doctor to try to date a patient. If the patient and doctor do start dating the patient should change primary doctors. I don't think doctors will lose their license for it unless something happens like the patient saying he wouldn't leave me alone and kept asking me out. It's weird and unprofessional to me though
ReplyDeleteThe love or want to go out with another person should be mutual and the fact that the other person is your doctor should have no play in the situation unless one person abuses it.
ReplyDeleteThis will result in a conflict of interest. I feel that the doctor should hold their professionalism and avoid engaging with their patients because there will always be favouritism shown. It is best for both to keep their relationship out of the professional sector if they were to engage in a relationship.
ReplyDeleteI feel that this completely crosses the line. Attractions are possible in the workplace and often can be deemed as a distraction to others through Physical Displays of Attraction. Same goes for the medical field. How can one possibly be honest and open with a doctor about their condition and reasons for visiting if they are worried about the doctor hitting on them, or judging them? We go to the doctors for the use of advanced technology and medical practice to solve our medical issues. This is a highly specialized profession where credence and experience serve as methods of doctor-patient trust. Private information is disclosed at the doctor's office, and if that information is later used to search or do online dating, then there is large problem with privacy.
ReplyDeleteWhy not, you could date yur mailman/mailwoman and there is no conflict of interest. How is this any different from anybody that provides a service. Who is it hurting? It would be a different situation if it were a case of someone having power over other's (Ex. a teacher and a student).
ReplyDeleteI personally would be very scared and offended if my doctor tried to contact me online to date me. Its unprofessional and just wrong. I am suppose to trust my doctor to take care of me and see me as his patient not something more than that.
ReplyDeleteI think that it would be extremely unprofessional if my doctor asked me out on a date. I would feel slightly violated, and probably wouldn't go back there. But honestly I think it would just depend on the relationship you had with your doctor. I think if you had other interactions with him/her outside of the doctor's office, it would be a different situation entirely. But if you only saw your doctor when you went in for your check up, then next time find yourself a new doctor.
ReplyDeleteIn my personal opinion, I feel that the doctor should only use information given to him by the patient for job related stuff. When the doctor gets into using the information for personal wants then they are crossing the line and their license should be took.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a fine line here. If a doctor is romantically interested in a patient then he should give up his resposibilities as their doctor. I see no reason a doctor could not ask a patient out as long as he is willing to give up the medical aspect. They should also only be able to use medical information listed about a patient for job related work not for picking the perfect date or anything like that. If this continues I would assume there would be some kind of way to check that this line is not being crossed. But at the end of the day a doctor needs love too!
ReplyDeleteI think the doctor who is interested in a patient and try to contact the patient online is really unprofessional. The patient trust and rely on the doctor, and bring the personal stuff to the doctor only because they believe doctor could cure their illness. If the doctor try to contact with their patient for more than their job, his(her) license should be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Caitlin about Doctor giving up his responsibilty as his 'romantic interest' doctor. Being attracted to someone is very natural but it would be a different case if he goes a bout it in the wrong way
